Many of us will remember the harrowing images of children in cots in orphanages when the news cameras were allowed into Romania after the downfall of Chauchesku in 1989. Jenny and David Helyer decided to go out to Romania to help, and made many visits with a team of volunteers to deliver aid and equipment to hospitals and orphanages in a town called Focsani. Jackie Warren, a member of the Family Church Christchurch, joined the team in 1994, and is now heavily involved along with several other members of the Church, many of whom are now trustees of Hands of Love Across Europe.

In 1995, the team felt that God was telling them to set up a children's home in Focsani. In 1997, the Charity 'Hands of Love Across Europe' was set up. Two years' late a building was found and many volunteers travelled to Romania to transform this building into the home for street kids that it is today. The Charity liaised fully with Romanian Social Services, and although the Charity set the home up, the home is now staffed by social service personnel.

The Charity continues to fundraise, and teams continue to visit Focsani in Romania. Hands of Love Across Europe is now hoping to find a property to transform into a second home for older teenagers. This will be a place where these young people who have been institutionalised for much of their lives can be taught the necessary life skills to prepare them for adulthood and independence.
